Eridanus Optics is the South African Dealer for Kendrick Astro Instruments.  Kendrick supply the white light solar film developed by the Baader Observatory.  Tests performed on these film shows supperieur performance when compared to more traditional films such as mylar.  Alan M MacRobert, in his test review of this product in the September 2000 issue of Sky and Telescope (p63 to p64) concludes that 'a new standard has been set for solar filters'.  Two grades of film is available:
  • ND5 (Attenuation to 10-5).  This film is suitable for visual use as well as for prime focus photography.
  • ND3.8 (Attenuation to 10-3.8).  This film is suitable for eyepiece projection photography.

A third 'grade' is available under the name 'turbo film'.  This film provides no attenuation, but is used to protect the telescope optics against dust, humidity, air currents, etc.  This film is not suitable for solar observation.

The Kendrick-Baader white light filters are available as follows:

  • Sheets.  This is ideal for groups to share the cost or for individuals with more than one telescope.  Off-cuts can be used for finder scopes, binoculars etc.  Eridanus Optics normally have stock of the visual and turbo film.  If you are not interested in buying a full sheet, we can supply you with smaller sizes at a small premium.  Contact us for a quote.  All three types of film are available as sheets.
  • Premounted (full aperture).  Premounted film are available to fit telescope outside diameters ranging from 66mm to 405mm (14").  We may have stock of some sizes from time to time, but due to the large number of sizes (50 different sizes are available) we cannot guarantee availability.  Pre-mounted film is also available in pairs for use on binoculars.  Contact us for a quote.  Full aperture premounted film are available in visual, photography and turbo grades.
  • Premounted (off axis):  Premounted film are available to fit telescope outside diameters ranging from 312mm (11") to 445mm (16").  The off axis aperture is 4" (for telescopes with outside diameter 312mm to 322mm and 336mm to 346mm) and 4.75" (for telescopes with outside diameter 389mm to 399mm, 395mm to 404mm and 435mm to 445mm). Premounted (off axis) film are available in visual and photography grade only.
